Description

From legendary storyteller and master of short fiction Stephen King comes an extraordinary new collection of twelve short stories, many never-before-published, and some of his best EVER.

“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to read. King writes to feel “the exhilaration of leaving ordinary day-to-day life behind,” and in You Like It Darker, readers will feel that exhilaration too, again and again.

“Two Talented Bastids” explores the long-hidden secret of how the eponymous gentlemen got their skills. In “Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream,” a brief and unprecedented psychic flash upends dozens of lives, Danny’s most catastrophically. In “Rattlesnakes,” a sequel to Cujo, a grieving widower travels to Florida for respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance—with major strings attached. In “The Dreamers,” a taciturn Vietnam vet answers a job ad and learns that there are some corners of the universe best left unexplored. “The Answer Man” asks if prescience is good luck or bad and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still be meaningful.

King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror and solace remains unsurpassed. Each of these stories holds its own thrills, joys, and mysteries; each feels iconic. You like it darker? You got it.

I have been an avid King reader my entire life. He has always been my favorite author. That being said, this book is total trash. The political innuendos and constant referrals to COVID have totally turned me off. Could not even finish the book. I read to escape reality. Not to have political/ social views thrown in my face See ya King. Your time is over.

With the Danny Coughlin story and “The Answer Man,” King has this reader in the palm of his hand. These two narratives alone, as they inexorably unfold, make the book as a whole well worth reading. So forgive the opening “Bastids” story’s silliness and keep on reading! I cared about a number of these characters deeply, and King is, here, master of plot and theme. In places, these narratives would not let go. In places the book was (openly) derivative ( think Flannery O’Connor), but the journey here is one I loved and I think you will too. The answer man says so.

Loved, loved, loved this! In my opinion, these are some of the best short stories King has ever written. He is still in superb form!

  • It seems okay

Just from the sample of this book it seems King has lost his ability to pull you into his books, it may just be me. I loved his book “Fairytale” that so many could not get into, rather this newer book seems to be just a bunch of rambling. It could possibly be a fantastic book deeper on, but I am not a person who will give a book 150 pages to start getting into it. It may be inferred that King is writing now as a time killer and less of a passion, maybe like a job rather than a rejuvenating hobby. Keep in mind I have not read the entire book though (with no more intentions to unfortunately.) Jesus Christ is the messiah! God bless.

I ate this book up. It was delicious. I look forward to eating many more. Each one is a thrill of a meal. In fact, I’d starve if it weren’t for SK, Tabitha King, Owen King and Joe Hill. Life is complete!

I was a fan. This book was pure, unadulterated junk. Most stories made no sense. Don’t know if he was drinking, doing drugs or just exhibiting senility but only one story had any shadow of his former ability. It was a total waste of money. He must have paid off the people who gave this book good reviews.

I laughed, cried, had major goosebumps on these stories. My only complaint is - I wish it never ended. Such a page turner!
