“The Graveyard Book” is a 2008 novel “for all ages” written by Neil “Gaiman. My e-book also had great cover art and Illustrations by Dave McKean. This book tells the story of Nobody Owens or “Bod” for short. His parents and sister were ritually murdered when he was a toddler, but luckily he escaped and ended up in an old graveyard at the top of a hill. The ghosts of the dead took him in, and along with his undead protector, Silas, they began to raise him. This is a great fantasy, that does have its dark aspects. However, overall it is positive and uplifting. Each chapter tells a different story at a different stage in Bod’s life. There is the time he discovers the ancient burial mound beneath the tombs. And there is the time he goes through the Ghoul Gate and has to be rescued. Later, he becomes a teenager and deals with the issues that brings. The stories are so intertwined that they have more cohesion than a collection. It reminds me of the older “fix up” novels that were serialized in magazines before being combined into one book. This is a powerful book that will draw the reader in and touch one’s emotions. I think that it will be very difficult to read the last chapter without being moved.

This is the second book I’ve read of Neil Gaiman’s after Coraline. And I thought this would bring some sparks and spooks than it did with Coraline but this had a whole new sets of world-buildings and main focus of the graveyard. I mean this book gave me the feels of Alice In Wonderland vibes! Anyways pretty good, a smooth quick read 🩶🩶

It’s a book that leaves you with wisps and wonders, and will haunt you for a good rest of your life, and after. I wish I had read it as a young teen, but am happy I read it at a good mid twenty all the same. I also wish I had better words for it, but it’s much more of an experience than I can describe. Nob is a bit of all of us, and none of us at all. It’s captures the fleeting but foreverness of life in such a beautiful way. As was said deep in these pages, I can come back, but it will be a place, not a home.

My daughter picked this book up at a school book fair, and she didn't get through it, but I found it on the shelf and thought it was interesting. Inside I found what has become one of my favorite stories of all time. I love this book. There are some great lessons to be found within the pages of this story. There are some wonderful moments. Some heartfelt. Some scary. Some just pure entertaining. A great great for people of any age!
