REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK!
“This story swept me away with its big dreams, love, and unexpected twists.” —Reese Witherspoon (Reese’s Book Club January ’25 Pick)

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo meets First Lie Wins in this electric, voice-driven debut novel about an elusive bestselling author who decides to finally confess her true identity after years of hiding from her past.

Cate Kay knows how to craft a story. As the creator of a bestselling book trilogy that struck box office gold as a film series, she’s one of the most successful authors of her generation. The thing is, Cate Kay doesn’t really exist. She’s never attended author events or granted any interviews. Her real identity had been a closely guarded secret, until now.

As a young adult, she and her best friend Amanda dreamed of escaping their difficult homes and moving to California to become movie stars. But the day before their grand adventure, a tragedy shattered their dreams and Cate has been on the run ever since, taking on different names and charting a new future. But after a shocking revelation, Cate understands that returning home is the only way she’ll be a whole person again.

The story was very slow and at points cliche. It seems written in hopes to become a movie rather than an actually good read. The worst thing is that the main character consistently makes inexcusable choices and I’m not sure why I’m supposed to overlook them or why anyone would like her. If she was a man, she would be a villain for her behavior.

Don’t start this book unless you have willpower or the time to read it straight through. Loved the method used to unspool this story - couldn’t put it down!
  • Easy bedtime read

Easy read, can stop and pick up whenever . Storyline is a bit drawn out and ending is lackluster . Loved Kate Fagan’s ‘what made Maddie’ book though.

This is one of the most intriguing books I’ve read in years. I wasn’t sure what to think in the beginning of reading it, and then I couldn’t put it down! I highly recommend this book to all avid readers.
  • A page-turner!

What a joy to read this book. At its heart it’s a familiar love story, or maybe a coming-of-age story, but the unusual structure blasts all clichés to smithereens. A great read!

One of the top reads to date. Right up there with 7 Husbands. Highly recommend to anyone who likes fast paced and lots of characters all coming full circle.
