The Stones of Venice was written by English art historian and art critic John Ruskin, whose philosophy and writings were a major inspiration for the ideology of the Arts and Crafts Movement. A chapter from that book, "The Nature of Gothic," was singled out by William Morris, who saw it as the core principle of the book, and printed an illustrated edition at his Kelmscott Press in London.
