Description

The phenomenal fifth book in the Hunger Games series!
When you've been set up to lose everything you love, what is there left to fight for?

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes.

Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

When Haymitch's name is called, he can feel all his dreams break. He's torn from his family and his love, shuttled to the Capitol with the three other District 12 tributes: a young friend who's nearly a sister to him, a compulsive oddsmaker, and the most stuck-up girl in town. As the Games begin, Haymitch understands he's been set up to fail. But there's something in him that wants to fight . . . and have that fight reverberate far beyond the deadly arena.

I love the Hunger Games series so much, and I’ve watched the films countless times. I’ve sobbed through those too, but this one hit different. Knowing who hay, itch becomes, reading the epilogue, having read songbirds and snakes…. I got through 3/4 of the book in a day, and sobbed through the last 3 chapters. Brilliant and tragic. I can only imagine what the film will do to me.

Yeah she’s done it again. Making you guess and keeping you on your heels with every chapter. I loved the book but also I’m angry at the book.

So good! We already knew some of the story after reading Catching Fire, but wow!! So many twists and heartbreaking moments that literally tear your heart apart. I’ll be hoping for Finnick’s or Johanna’s story next! I’m so glad Suzanne decided to go back to the present tense/first person, it adds so much magic to her writing. I mean, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was a nice experiment, but this one is way better. And if you decide to listen to the audiobook, the narrator really embodies what I imagine young Haymitch should sound like. Suzanne, please never stop writing!!

I read all of the hunger games growing up and I have to say despite how heartbreaking this story is, it is probably my favorite out of them all. I have never read a book that made me feel so emotional and quite honestly anxious. This one isn’t for the weak but it’s so worth it.

It is rare that an ending of a story brings me to tears, but this one did. Haymitch Abernathy’s experience in The Hunger Games was brutal. I truly understand why he became an alcoholic more than I did when I read the first book in this series. Even though I knew the outcome of the story, the ending still broke my heart. Suzanne Collins is the queen of publishing a story , releasing it and disappearing into the ether. I’m glad that I previously read the first four books in this series in the order that they were released. Collin’s sprinkled so many Easter eggs that I smiled every time I every time I recognized them. This book is four stars out of five for me. I’m waiting with bated breath for the news regarding the casting for upcoming adaptation. I’ll also be waiting for her next book announcement because I know it’s coming soon. I hope this time she writes a story about Cinna.
  • Amazing and tragic

An amazingly written backstory for Haymitch which gives insight into his broken character, and how evil Snow and the capital was. And even fleshed out (though in much smaller part) other characters like Effie, Mags, Wiress, Beetee, and Plutarch. This shines as a stand alone but having already finished the hunger games set, this put it over the top for me. Be prepared to cry, because if you’ve read the Hunger games or seen the movies, you’ll know, there really can’t be a happy ending.

Haymitchs' story was essential to the development and addition of the Hunger Games series. I think it would have made sense though to have reversed the order in which these prequels came out; Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and this book. I have been wanting to know more about Haymitch since the very beginning and this read was very well written. Highly recommend and can't wait to see if there's a production coming in the future!

This has been my first official virtual book read, and it was just simply amazing. I read it in like 3 days, and I couldn't stop! The story, the characters, the arena, just everything that happens was insane. Highly recommend this book, especially to people who love The Hunger Games!
