This is an incredible read, with so many different insights to the sufferings of an enslaved people. Buy this, read it and be thankful for a talented author.

The novel literally gave me chills at points. The use of language was absolutely brilliant. The way the author wove in Huck Finn was masterful. I have taught The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn for many years and I would bring this along as a companion book, especially to an AP literature class.

I’ve read a decent amount of Everett’s work, but this was one of my favorite pieces.

Eloquent, profound, and relevant. More stories and perspectives such as this need to be shared to make us whole. Thank you Mr Everette!

Great read about a terrible subject. The plot was tough but engaging and full of adventure. It was one I had a hard time putting down. I hope there is a sequel.

An author at the height of his craft, Everett winds the reader tighter, and tighter into this profound story of truth and justice in a time of very little.
  • Captivating

Twain struggled for years trying to complete The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Most readers agree that the ending is makeshift and unsatisfactory. Mr. Everett’s novel is the completed version that Twain struggled for in vain. Twain’s problem was that he needed for the central character to be a Black enslaved man, but nothing in his experience helped him to realize that character. Instead, he told it from the point of view of one of his stock characters, a (formerly) poor white boy. In James the runaway slave is a fully realized human being, and stands in his central role.
  • The other side

With homage to Sam Clemens, this is Jim’s/James’ story. Beautifully written, James is presented as a fully developed man: an introspective, thoughtful, clear and forceful in his mind and beliefs. A husband, a father, a teacher: knows what he wants and must do. And nothing will stop him. Highly recommended!
  • Far exceeded my expectations

I loved it. He stays close to the plot of Huck Finn, and adds persuasive detail. I don’t want to spoil anything, but adding James’s perspective to Huck’s story is most welcome.
