“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

Emotionally gripping, RY does an amazing job keeping you hooked and wanting more. I’ve read FW & IF twice now, and I no doubt will read them at least once more for OF is released. Each read you catch more details, making the story that much more engaging, and drawing you more emotionally vested in the beloved characters. Can’t wait to read the rest of The Empyrean series.

I know that lots of people have been saying that this book is not as good as the first, but trust me it is so worth the read! It’s definitely a little more chaotic and not so isolated to just the college, but the world building is top tier. It’s a great sequel to the first book with having an ending that has me itching to read the next book in the series.

  • Less spice, more plot

If you enjoyed more of the spice aspect of the series you won’t enjoy this one as much as the first. I liked this one a bit more than the first book because of the further development of plot and character growth. Just a matter of personal preference.

I was immediately enchanted and wholly immersed by the depths and complexities of the characters in these books and the realistic portrayal of their magic infused existence and the laws by which their lives are governed and abide by. What a clever and powerfully crafted imagination the author has and the beauty that she has infused into her story lines and the pitch perfect plot lines were pure genius. Such a well written and highly entertaining story and characters that are not only genuinely interesting but are also highly entertaining and truly lovable. I couldn’t help but build connections or feel such a profound sense of belonging while reading about this experience and especially learning about each individual and highly dynamic characters that I instantaneously shared a deep connection with but as I read further into Book#2 I became fully immersed into their relatable experiences loyalty amongst themselves and their compassion and empathy for the majority of those in their group and even those who’s characteristics and values weren’t shared and they had a skewered sense of self absorbed identities and were blatantly apathetic to all of those around them, who would turn out to be their biggest liability and meant harm to their group and all of those who were loyal to their entire community. These enemies had such tragic lives and backstories you can’t help but feel compassion and pity for them and their misguided and selfish actions and violent acts. One hopes they’ll turn into the kind and responsible citizens that majority of the other student are but as it stands in the book and was expressed many times, magic had duality to it- what one took that would pay for and so to keep it balanced was the way to conduct their lives and interactions with others and their morality. The dragons were wise sages, ancient creatures who knew the answers to all issues plaguing humans and their chosen ones yet no matter what sort of magic they would yield once garnering their powers they’d find within themzelves yet the power to become that was lent to them by their bonded dragons. They needed to learn how to use their magic responsibly and with practice they would learn to appropriately harness the required amount necessary to maintain their power and to utilize it effectively. As with any skill in our lives, we need to learn balance and humility with the ability and gifts we’ve been given and to be aware and accountable to our use of them as well as to sharing them or loaning them to further guide, assist or support their friends and loved omes, the universal message was to use it with extreme reverence and to be aware and humble of the power and respectfully garner its strength using it responsibly and always in our loved ones favor. Do for others as you’d want done to you. Remain loyal compassionate and humble towards your own gifts and fortunate experiences as well as have reverence and respect to others. Universal acceptance and love was the greatest message and collective actions that they would receive and give towards others in both books.

This book is just as good as the first and had me on the edge of my seat as the plot unraveled and each character entered with crazy spins. I love this author and I have read almost all of her books. Such a fun series & can’t wait for book 3!!

After reading this book it threatens to take the number one slot in my list of favorite books/series. Maybe it does take the number one slot, I’m still reeling from the final page of the book. I am counting down the days until the third book is available. I can’t wait to see how they overcome their next challenge. I can’t wait to be surprised. My heart is full and broken at the same time. I lied, it definitely took the number one spot!

i saw the bad reviews and was afraid of reading but i still find it very worth the read. my only exception was that it felt a little rushed towards the end when the whole book was leading up to it but i enjoyed it, it's a good read
