This book is so poorly written that I could not finish it. The sentence structure and descriptions employed by the author are comparable to fan fiction written by middle schoolers, even though the plot is fairly interesting. Characters are barely fleshed out, in personality or in appearance, and there is no explanation of how Planeswalking magic works. If you’re looking for a good fantasy series, try the first several Drizzt novels.

I would not be surprised to learn that Mr. Weisman was not informed about any number of important plot points or character developments leading into this book, as he was not involved in the previous material, but I would be shocked to learn that he read any of the Ixalan stories- and the Jace/Vraska storyline is why I paid for this. I did not get my payoff. Teyo is clearly the author’s character, and I like him just fine. Unfortunately, this was my introduction to Weisman’s work, and the structure and pacing did not impress me. Do look up the Drunk History sub-Reddit of this, chapter by chapter... that’s brilliant. Sorry you took on a terrible burden, Mr. Weisman, better luck next time.
